In the brightest day...

Ya know, Thinking about all the cool weapons in comics,I gotta say I think the coolest one to have would be a GL power ring. Sure, adamantium claws would be pretty groovy for somethings as would Cap's vibranium shield. Batman has some neat gadgets to but, all in all I gotta say the coolest of them all is the ring bestowed on those with the ability to overcome great fear by the Guardians of the Galaxy. Of course, I could see myself becoming pretty lazy if I did have one of those rings. I mean I would use it for everything. cleaning the house, grabbing the TV remote, turning off my alarm, everything. Not only that but, I would sell my car and fly everywhere, even the corner store. heck if my ceiling had a higher clearance I would fly to the bathroom using it. Heck I'd even use it as my furniture and sell off all of mine.

Truly the Greatest Green Lantern in History

So, today i thought it would be fun to write something about my favorite Green Lantern...

Guy Gardner. Out of all the GLs he's my fave, followed in a close second by Kilowog. I'm not exactly sure why I like Guy so much. Maybe, it's because he's the only superhero with the guts to moon Batman or maybe it's because of all the things he's been through from brain damage to Warrior to GL Honor Guard. Maybe it's just because he's so easy for me to identify with (obnoxious jerk with a heart of gold, is pretty much my thing, lol). But, of all the eras I think my favorite is brain damaged Guy. Of course, my main reason for why I dig brain damaged Guy so much is his wacky personality changes, ala Charles in Charge. What can I say I'm just a sucker for the bump on the head = complete change in personality school of comedy. lately, I've been reading the JLI trades and it's brought back a lot of my fond memories of when I read these things as a kid. Of course, because of a lot a different factors I usually got to buy one or two books form a given storyline back than. But, for whatever reason I was always especially happy when I was staring at the spinner racks at the grocery store and I saw his ugly mug on the cover. Heck the only issue I picked up of that horrible book DC: Decisions. Was the one with Guy on the cover and reading the JLI trades and seeing Guy in his full-on Reaganite, Rambo is a pussy glory just warms the cockles (or maybe the sub-cockle area) of my heart. Right now, I think my favorite panel with Guy in it is from when he was fighting Lobo and Booster traps Guy in a energy sphere and keeps trying to get Guy to calm down saying I will not punch strangers, or some such line. Well, that's all I've got to say about Guy for now. But, before I go I think I'll you with a nice image of Guy to keep your minds off the terrible weather this week...

Since John Seavey is never gonna do it

For those unfamilar with John Seavey he writes a blog called fraggmented, on this blog one of the things he writes about is the story engines of various tv shows and comic books. If you get the itch you should check it out (sorry, I'm too retarded to link stuff, lol). Anyways according to his definition of a story telling engine. Basically, it is the settings, occupations and, supporting casts members that can each generate stories inorder for writers to work serialized fiction.
Anyways, I enjoy reading this blog and after finally succombing to new comic day. I got some new comics. Including the Green Lantern Corps. Which is basically a cop show in outerspace. Well, while reading the latest issue of GLC. It dawned on me for the first time (yeah, I'm kinda slow like that) I noticed just how good of a storytelling engine this book has. Fisrt of all, it has around two hundred people in its supporting cast. Which makes it easy to write since if you can't figure out something to do with one character you can always do it to one of the many bit players. Not only that but, you can also use any of the bit players in order to draw the main characters into a new story or play against the main characters. They can do all sorts of stuff to generate new stories. Next is there is the galactic cop angle. By using the tropes of both a cop shows and sci fi shows, to generate new stories. The writers can do alot more stories than some one wrting about cops and robbers or space travel. The writers of the Green Lantern Corps. They can mix and match tropes from both kinds of stories or the can just focus more on the cop part or more on the space part as they wish (as long as they do blend together once in awhile). Basically, you can look at the GLC as Star Trek and Law and Order (or one of those types of shows) or if your so inclined you could describe it as Frirefly crossed with The Shield (but not quite as violent) and it has the added bonus of having a cast of hundreds. The only problem with this story telling engine is how far you can go in any direction without going to far and ending up breaking the audiences willing suspension of disbelief. Besides that though the skies the limit (literally) or at least that's my ten cents.
